Low back pain

Low back pain is one of the most common and most costly problems of our society.  Most people will experience low back pain at least once in their lifetime and many will experience ongoing or intermittent back pain throughout their life.

At Sexton Chiropractic a significant part of our work involves managing acute and chronic low back pain and associated symptoms such as sciatica.  Our chiropractors are highly qualified and have many years of experience helping people overcome what can be a debilitating condition.

Low back pain can be very complex.  There are multiple potential causes and yet the cause is not always clear.

Common contributing factors to the onset of back pain include our sedentary lifestyles, physical inactivity, poor posture, stress, poor physical condition such as weak core muscles and of course factors such as trauma and sports injuries.  However, back pain also has strong biopsychosocial components influencing its onset and its persistence.  A better understanding of your condition is one of the most important steps in achieving recovery.

A key focus of our care at Sexton Chiropractic is educating people about the nature of their condition and the best ways to not only accelerate healing but also reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

Our approach to managing back pain is always a holistic one.  We look to determine the specific cause of your problem as well as providing symptomatic relief.  To achieve this, we conduct a thorough assessment of your spinal health and develop an appropriate plan of management.

You will always be informed and actively involved in your care.

Our approach to managing your back pain may include some of the following:

Manual therapy:  Our chiropractors are highly skilled in delivering specific, gentle and effective manual adjustments and mobilisation techniques to the spine aimed at improving joint mobility and proprioception (healthy nerve function).

Soft tissue therapy:  After a thorough assessment of muscle strength, tone and posture, our chiropractors, massage therapists and myotherapists will often utilise specific soft tissue therapy to reduce muscle tension and improve function.

Stretching, strengthening and rehabilitation exercises:  Our chiropractors prioritise exercise as an important component of low back pain management.  We believe that although the care provided in our practice is a vital part of your recovery plan, so too is the home care and lifestyle advice we give and the exercises we prescribe to improve the strength, movement and resilience of your spine.  We can tailor a specific exercise program appropriate for your condition.

Our chiropractors at Sexton Chiropractic have been providing effective treatment to people experiencing low back pain for more than 25 years.  Our practices are located in Torquay on the Surf Coast, Bendigo in central Victoria and Surrey Hills in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
