Good-bye and Thank You to Helen and Jo

We are sad to inform you that Helen McConnell is leaving our practice in the coming weeks. Helen has been running our Carlton and Surrey Hills offices for more than 7 years and her contribution over this time has been enormous. Helen will be greatly missed by her fellow staff and the team of practitioners she has looked after so well in her time here. No doubt she will also be missed greatly by all our clients who have become so accustomed to seeing her face each time they enter our office. Thank you Helen.

Dr Josephine Sexton will also be leaving us in the next couple of weeks in preparation for the birth of her second child. Jo has been a greatly valued addition to our practice over the past 18 months at both Carlton and Surrey Hills. We wish Jo and her family all the best in this exciting time. Her last day at our Surrey Hills practice will be Saturday the 27th of June.

New Study: Probiotic Strain Boosts Immune Response to Flu Virus

With all the current hype about swine flu, it is important to remember that the best thing you can do to protect yourself naturally against this and any other disease for that matter, is to be as healthy as you can be. For many people the use of probiotics may give their immune system an additional boost and this has been further highlighted by recent research outlined below.

A new study just published in the journal Postgraduate Medicine has good news about a way to help fight a potential flu pandemic, naturally. Researchers found that a specific strain of probiotics, which are beneficial microorganisms similar to the "friendly" bacteria found naturally in the body's digestive system, increases the body's immune response to the flu virus -- specifically, to influenza A. The currently much hyped and much feared so-called swine flu, is a variant of influenza A.
Many mainstream medical doctors and natural health practitioners have long recognized that probiotics can often help people with digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhoea, flatulence, and bloating. This new study demonstrates that taking probiotics regularly can also boost the immune system in a specific way which helps the body give influenza A the boot. The probiotics strain, which has the scientific tongue-twister name of Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, PTA-6086, was found to cause significant increases in T-cell production of TNF-alpha, a key immune system activity marker, when healthy adults were exposed to influenza.

Results showed a 1709% increase in TNF-alpha levels upon viral challenge after the research participants had taken the probiotic for about a month. Dr Mira Baron, MD, noted in her study that the initial, dramatic increase in the body's production of TNF-alpha in response to viral exposure shows a heightened immunological response aimed at protecting against infection. The study did not evaluate an immune response to the specific swine flu virus (H1N1), however, there's certainly reason to think that the use of probiotics could boost the body's natural defenses to fight a variety of flu viruses, including swine flu.

Dr. Gary Huffnagle, a professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Michigan, and author of the book The Probiotics Revolution reviewed Dr. Baron's findings and concluded the research adds to the growing body of scientific data that show probiotics boost immune function of healthy adults to defend against infection and lessen the symptoms of disease. "I think it is a wise move to include the consumption of probiotics, along with [a] good diet, frequent hand washing and other recommendations by the CDC in the battle against flu. While more research is needed to demonstrate whether this translates into reduced hospitalization and/or deaths, it's a healthy, low-cost, proactive thing that people can do that has no risks associated with it."
